Elisha Sarti is a "painter," who up 'til this decade used very little paint! Instead, she used stuff like iced tea mix, dirt, toothpaste, bits of trash and pine needles. "It started in 4th grade, when I learned that ancient peoples ground rocks to make pigment," says the artist. "That you could paint with something other than store-bought tubes fascinated me. After school, I spent hours grinding rocks I found in my backyard. It never quite worked, but the process was really fun! It was one of the things that years later led me to experiment with unconventional art-making techniques and materials." Though she's abandoned most of her paint substitutes due to bad smells, Sarti continues her experiments. Her latest involves recycling junkmail into art.
Along with her husband, Scott Lickstein, she is co-founder of this site.
